Chapter 174

Chapter 174Chapter 174 They Were Childhood Sweethearts Who Grew Up Together

It was clear that Zoe was displeased with Matthew’s lack of care for his own health.

There was even a hint of blame in her tone.

Aurelia silently sipped her water as she listened on.

Upon hearing the mention of insomnia, Gordon instantly shifted his gaze toward Aurelia, Matthew’s

recent sleep issues had significantly improved, all thanks to Aurelia.

It seemed as if Matthew had never told Zoe about this.

For reasons unknown, he felt as though Zoe’s arrival had somehow driven a wedge between

Aurelia and Matthew, creating a huge rift between them.

After Zoe spoke some more, she appeared somewhat weary. Seeing this, Matthew escorted Zoe

back to her hospital ward, while Gordon sa behind to take care of Aurelia.

“Um… Ms. Souza and Matthew grew up together when they were young, and also…”

Gordon felt it was necessary to clarify the relationship between Zoe and Matthew, to prevent any

misunderstandings from arising with Aurelia.

From the introduction given by Gordon, Aurelia came to understand the relationship between

the two.

Zoe was the daughter of Matthew’s housekeeper. Following an unforeseen incident, Zoe’s mother sacrificed her life to protect Matthew. From that day

forward, Matthew took responsibility for everything in Zoe’s life.

Three years ago, Zoe moved to Kenfort to attend university, expressing her fondness for this.

romantic city.

A few days ago, due to feeling unwell, she was admitted to the hospital. The diagnosis revealed

some heart issues, and surgery was needed within the next couple of days. That was why Matthew

had to rush over from Jacaster.

Gordon particularly emphasized that the relationship between the two was akin to siblings, and that

Matthew took care of Zoe as if she was his sister.

After the death of Zoe’s mother years ago, Mabel had sought out Zoe’s other family members.

However, none of them wanted an extra burden, so Mabel took it upon herself to raise Zoe.

Upon hearing this, having understood the whole story, Aurelia chuckled and said. “I see.”

“Therefore, Mr. Quigley is concerned about Ms. Souza’s health. The surgery is likely scheduled. for

tomorrow,” Gordon added.

Aurelia nodded in response. Having regained her strength after eating oatmeal and drinking some

water, she felt as if she was back at full health. “Gordon, could you do me a favor and find out if I’m

a condition to be discharged anytime soon?”

It was merely a case of gastroenteritis, so she figured there was no need for her to occupy a bed in the intensive care ward.

“All right; I’ll go ask the doctor,” Gordon replied.

Once Gordon had left, Aurelia was the only one remaining in the room.

She then went to the bathroom to freshen up.

After stepping out of the bathroom, she saw Matthew sitting on the couch.

He’s back so soon?

“I had Mr. Zeller help me ask the doctor about my condition. I’d like to be discharged if there are no

complications.” Aurelia said with a faint smile.

Upon noticing how Aurelia appeared rather distant. Matthew asked, “I didn’t tell you about Zoe

before. Would you like to know about her?”

“Mr. Zeller just briefed me, so I’m aware of your relationship with Zoe,” Aurelia said with a smile.

Matthew was momentarily taken aback, but soon nodded in agreement. “All right, then. You should

return to the hotel and rest for today. As for tomorrow-

“I can handle my own schedule for tomorrow. I’m aware that Ms. Souza will have surgery tomorrow.

You and Gordon should stay with her at the hospital, Aurelia said, cutting him off.

She had just met Zoe today, so she figured Zoe would probably feel uncomfortable if she were to be

present for the surgery tomorrow.

Matthew was deeply scrutinizing Aurelia with an intense gaze, but he didn’t notice anything odd

about her. “All right, then.”

The next moment, Gordon returned and said, “I just spoke with the doctor. You’re cleared to be

discharged. He prescribed a few medications, which I’ve already purchased for you.”

And so, Aurelia left the hospital and returned to the hotel.

Originally, Matthew was already in the car with her, ready to head back to the hotel for some rest.

However, Zoe suddenly called, saying she wasn’t feeling well, so Matthew returned to the hospital

while Gordon drove Aurelia to the hotel.

It took roughly twenty minutes to reach the hotel.

After dropping her off, Gordon rushed back to the hospital. It seemed that Zoe’s condition was

After taking a bath, Aurelia laid down on the bed to rest.

noveldramaShe then pulled out her phone and casually chatted with Nancy.

Nancy had remained silent for the next two days after that night.

Having some free time now, she belatedly realized that something seemed off with Nancy’s

situation.

If it had been in the past, even after sharing a tender moment with Justin, he would have given her

a call or sent her a message on WhatsApp the next day. She sent a photo that she had taken at the hospital from her phone with the message: Who

would’ve thought I’d end up in the hospital with gastroenteritis while on vacation, eh?

She even included a crying emoji at the end of the message.

Within a minute, Nancy had called her.

“What’s going on with you? I don’t recall you ever having such poor health. You used to eat and

drink with me every day without any issues. I’ve never seen you have a stomachache before. How

come you’ve got gastroenteritis after going to Kenfort?”

Nancy probably thought about what Aurelia had gone through after returning to the Leedon family,

as she added, “I disagreed with you donating blood to Melanie from the start. I felt uncomfortable

every time I saw her. She was clearly a manipulative woman. But you had just returned to the

Leedon family and wanted to get along with them, so I couldn’t stop you. Now I really regret it, I

should have stopped you then!”

Aurelia laughed and said, “I regret it deeply now as well. I was so naive back then, genuinely

believing that the Leedon family would appreciate my efforts. In the end, it was as if I had thrown

everything to the dogs.”

“Well, it’s not too late for you to have a change of heart now. What do you think? Any romantic

encounters? With your looks, men would undoubtedly fall over each other just to get your attention.

Just the other day, my cousin was asking about you. He seemed smitten at first sight. What do you

think? Would you consider him?” Nancy asked, taking on the role of a matchmaker.

Hearing Nancy’s business–as–usual tone over the phone, Aurelia let go of her worries.

“There’s no need for a romantic encounter. I’m a married woman, after all. I must remain loyal to my

marriage. Besides, all this talk of love and romance doesn’t suit me,” Aurelia replied.

At that time, her relationship with Matthew was just right. They were physically satisfied, treated

each other with mutual respect as a married couple, and did not interfere with each other’s work.

She believed that if Matthew wanted a divorce one day, she could walk away without any pain, and

she was sure Matthew felt the same way.

Uncharacteristically, Nancy did not counter Aurelia’s claim that romance and love talk were not

suitable. Instead, she said with a hint of helplessness, “What do you mean by a married woman?

Are you getting too immersed in your role? Are you seriously going to tell me that Matthew ist

“I would deceive anyone but you. My husband truly is Matthew.

“If your husband really turns out to be Matthew, I’ll go pole dance at the bar for you!”

“Do you really have to go all out?”

“If

you are able to marry Matthew, then I see no reason why I can’t pole dance.”

“If Mr. Hoffman finds out that you went pole dancing, he’d definitely lock you up at home,” Aurelia

said as she recalled the last time at the bar. Justin looked somewhat frightening when he came topick up Nancy, who was drunk. He probably forbade Nancy from going to the bar again. after they

got home.

Nancy paused for a few seconds before declaring, “Forget about him! No one can stop me from

doing what I want!”

Due to them being several thousand kilometers apart and speaking through the phone, Aurelia

didn’t pick up on the slight oddity in Nancy’s demeanor.
